When you want to split test your ads in Google AdWords, you create two or more ads. It's best to test them two at a time. So if you get some brilliant ideas and come up with 10 ads at a time, the easiest way would be to pause the other 8 and run them two at a time.
After you have run the ads for say 50-100 clicks (the more clicks, the more accurate your results but it really depends on your budget) you can select the winner. Now what do you do next?
If you make a change to an existing active ad the statistics history will be erased and you will lose all the data. So here's the trick.
You can pause the old ads and create two new ones. Make one of the new ads exactly the same as the winner. I've tried this and you're allowed to create a duplicate ad. This way, you'll start both ads fresh and will be able to keep the old ads' statistics.
The other option is to write down the details of your split test somewhere - in a handy dandy notebook or create a spreadsheet on your computer.
